Ask me (almost) Anything...

Good Morning Beautiful People!

I thought I'd do a little 'Q&A' session with you guys today. So, just put your question in the comment box and I'll do my best to answer them.

You can ask me almost anything, but I reserve the right to refuse to answer the question on the grounds that I feel it's too personal (or just don't want to answer it). Please refrain from vulgar, inappropriate (use common sense ya'll), or otherwise trifling questions. Any outright raggedy questions/comments will be deleted.

Other than that... ask whatever you want.

  1. would you say going to beauty school is a must if you plan to become a make up artist? Do you really need a license to be a make up artist ? xD Thank you :D

  2. No Dyna. Going to beauty school is not a must. But it certainly can't hurt. The benefit of beauty school is that in addition to makeup technique, you can also learn about skin care (cosmetology/esthetician). I think that is SERIOUSLY underrated among professional MUA's. We should all be aware of how to take care of our client's skin when we do makeup.

And no, you don't need a license to be a makeup artist. It doesn't hurt, but it doesn't guarantee work either. Talent, professionalism, cleanliness, and work ethic rule.

  4. Morphine... I can't even really tell you 'cause I don't really know! LOL
Honestly, I just like doing it. It's fun, and I love the idea of sharing goodies. When I really think something is awesome, I feel compelled to buy more than one. And since there is no way that I NEED more than one, I just give the other one away. I'm not really into selling makeup items (like on ebay and stuff)... it seems like a hassle. I'd rather just give it away.

It's easy for me to do(I can afford it from time to time)and it makes someone happy. Everyone wins.

  10. Sugar... I am actually planning to tell you guys more about my skin care routine. I just bought a new toy and I want to see how it works with my regular routine.

    Thanks for the compliment!

I likely will never do a contouring tutorial (at least not in the near future... not ready for youtube), but Samantha Chapman of Pixiwoo did a GREAT one once upon a time.

    Here's the link:

  11. What made you decide to become a professional make up artist? As in, was it just something you always knew you wanted to be? Was there a "click" moment?, etc.. :)

  12. Pegs, it was kind of a natural transition. I come from an artistic family, but have never been able to draw anything more than a stick figure. It turns out, drawing just isn't my thing. Makeup is. Once I figured that out, it was a no brainer.

I didn't always want to be a makeup artist, but I loved the idea of playing with color and creating different looks on a face... even changing features. I knew the 'what' of it, but I never knew the 'how' of it. Does that make sense?

In 1997, I did makeup (just basic stuff) for a local news anchor. MAC had just come to my city and some of the MUA's noticed the anchor. I went to the counter and talked to someone that same day... and they gave me an app for 'pro training' (2 month course with pro artists and reigonal reps). I studied my butt off, worked for MAC for a couple of years, and the rest is history.

  15. which items are better bought in drugstore and which ones are better bought high end? For people starting out. :)

    ReplyDelete
  16. This is my OPINION... but I tend to spend more money on foundations. Most of my foundations are high end. My feeling is that they go directly onto the skin (same with primers), and I'm very particular about that. I like the formulas and finishes better than I like the drug store brands.

I will typically explore drug store brands for powder products (eyeshadows and blushes) and the occasional lipstick.

One of the very basic reasons that I prefer higher end makeup is the ability to test a product before buying it, and the return policy. Incidentally, I just got a call from the Chanel rep, who teased me about returning the foundation and offered me an alternative to try out. I love good customer service, and I like the idea that I can return a thing if it simply doesn't work out for me.

  17. Hi I'm a brown girl pretty new to makeup.I am having serious concealer and foundation issues meaning I can't seem to pick out the correct shades for myself ,and when I go to the cosmetic counters in department stores they Always make me orange!
    HELP!!!

  18. Your undertones are likely too cool for what they consider 'darker' foundations. What brands have you tried? Estee Lauder DW light stays cool. So does Chanel Mat Lumiere and Pro Lumiere. Chantecaille goes yellow, but not orange. Make Up For Ever HD stays cool as well. Make sure to test on your jawline and check it in natural light befor you commit to it. Hope that helps!
